Some Frequently Asked Questions about the Satellite School
Program
What is the first step in starting my own Satellite School?
Interested parties should call 1-800-595-2630 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.,
Pacific Time, Monday through Friday, to arrange for an in-depth interview.
If you are in our local Western Washington area, we would like to meet
with you in person to discuss the program. Please phone us at (360) 595-2630.
We may also be contacted online through this website or at orion@nas.com.
Must I enroll a minimum number of students to start my own Satellite
School?
Teachers starting a Satellite School need to have a minimum of five
enrolled students.
Do the parents of students enrolled in my Satellite program need
to file an "Intent to Home School" form with their local public
school district?
YES. The only exception is Washington State. Teachers agree and are expected
to be completely familiar with the laws pertaining to homeschooling in
their states, and parents should contact the office of their local public
school district for more information.
What kind of students can benefit from the applied educational philosophies
of the Alger Learning Center through the Satellite School Program?
For two decades, the Alger Learning Center has served the educational
needs of a sizable and diverse group of students, assisting many of them
in receiving Washington State approved high school diplomas from our Independence
High School. Students who have thrived in our programs include, but are
not limited to:
- students who are highly capable, self-directed learners;
- homeschoolers who need regular contact with a local certified teacher;
- students who need a credit-retrieval program;
- students who have been suspended from or had to drop out of a pub- lic
school for attendance or health reasons;
- students who are not experiencing success in a public school program
and could use more individualized instruction and custom
curriculum;
- students who are interested in combining independent learning with global
travel or employment opportunities.
- those who would like to graduate sooner than their peers (possible through
the Alger Learning Center/Independence High School
because students are allowed to work at their own rate, and our programs
are offered year around).
