Some Frequently Asked Questions about the Local Program

What is the time frame for enrollment in the Alger Learning Center/Independence High School?

Students may enroll anytime, all year around.

What are the attendance requirements in the local program?

Washington State law requires 4 hours of student/teacher contact time per month, which generally takes place at our Cain Lake campus. In the case of students traveling, or those with work, health, or other considerations, these contact hours may be averaged.

Some students need or desire more than 4 hours of contact time, and we are happy to accommodate them, although we are not a custodial, six-hour-a-day, classroom-style school.

Many students have a standing appointment, where they come to the learning center on a regular day or days, at a regular time, and stay for an hour or more; other students require more flexibility. While we can often schedule same-day appointments, this is not always possible, so walk-ins are discouraged, and an appointment must be made by phone prior to coming to the Cain Lake campus.

What are your hours?

Generally, we are open for student classroom time, and for student/parent interviews and conferences, from 10:00 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Arrangements to meet with staff members at times outside of these hours must be made in advance. Telephone calls to Alger Learning Center are welcome from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Pacific Time, Monday - Friday.

We are open year-around, though we close between Christmas and New Year's, and for certain other holidays.

Please remember that an appointment is necessary when coming to the campus.
